Fear me dear, for I am death
A look of pure contempt was visible on Erebus' features, icy blue eyes darting from one person to another as they passed him by. Once more the pagan god tried to remind himself why exactly he had chosen to mingle among mortals. When the reason didn't immediately occur to him, his brows pulled together to a frown. All the while he dug through his memory, attempting to find the motive as to why exactly he had chosen to leave his home this morning. Oh right: he was bored and whenever boredom took a hold of him, Erebus needed to find something or someone to pass time with. It wasn't easy, that much he could already tell. After being alive for eons on end, there was little he hadn't seen. Of course, there were still parts of the world unknown to him, waiting to be explored but he preferred to postpone travelling to abandoned places. Why, one might ask. The reason for this was very simple. The spots on earth left untouched by humans were few and dwindling every day. Some of them, however, were too dangerous even for mortals to venture, they formed the perfect hiding places in case Erebus needed one. Luxury was a problem when one had to hide in the woods but the Greek deity wouldn't complain. Not as long as it kept him alive.
Despite the fact that every so often he needed to hide and that he couldn't stand the company of these mortals, he still preferred it over being alone. There was nothing more unbearable that one's own company. It had been Socrates who once said that one could escape the company of others but not that of oneself. In order to lead a good and happy life, one needed to be at peace with oneself, needed to tolerate one's own company. It was a lot to ask if Erebus' opinion on the matter was asked and many times he had wondered why exactly this was so important. Now even more he asked himself why Socrates would speak such words. If one could do what one desired and it made that particular individual happy, wasn't that all that mattered?
Shaking his head slightly the pagan god tried to push the thoughts aside. Philosophy wasn't something he should busy himself with when he was surrounded by various people, crawling around him like ants. Without noticing it himself, his nose wrinkled slightly at the thought. Even though he had hoped that coming to a mall in a town in Kansas would change something about his mood, it didn't take his boredom away. Perhaps he should be patient a bit longer. He couldn't expect someone to throw him- or herself at his feet after a few seconds. No one knew who he was after all, or what he was for that matter. It was a strange thing ... For two thousand years people believed in one god, one all powerful being who ruled over Heaven and Hell, who created earth and gave these creatures the opportunity to lead their lives. That was how the story went but the inevitable still happened: the deities of old were forgotten, as if they had never existed. No wonder it had become such a struggle for them to survive.
A sigh slipped past his lips, dragging himself back to reality. Then his gaze fell upon a young lady, making her way through the crowd. Blue hues followed her movements, clearly interested in her. The ridiculous amount of junk she was carrying with her attracted little of his attention. No, something was different about her but he couldn't exactly put his finger on it. Erebus was about to dismiss the feeling when suddenly something fell out of one of the bags. It was filled to the brim with what seemed to be party hats and a few of them had fallen to the floor. Immediately he came into action, pushing his way through the crowd until he reached the little hats. Rapidly he picked them up and then pursued the female who hadn't noticed that she lost something. Once he was within reach, he gave a soft tap on her shoulder. "Excuse me miss, but I believe this is yours." A friendly smile accompanied the words while he held out the party hats to her. "Do you need help with that?" He then asked, his free hand gesturing towards the multiple bags she was carrying.
Different or not, she would do for now.
