Hear me, I'm crying out The day just did not start out right for the teenager. To start it off, her alarm clock did not go off, causing her to wake up late and rush through getting ready for school. She did not have time to properly straighten and style her hair, thus resorting to tugging a hat onto her head and grabbing her backpack to rush out of the door. Her shouts of 'wait' and 'hold on!' did nothing to stop her bus from moving away from it's stop, trundling down the street without her in it. It also did not take long after arriving at the bus stop and resigning herself to the knowledge that she would have to wait another fifteen minutes for the next one, to realize that her shirt was on inside out.
All in all, the day was not going according to plan, the one saving grace was the fact that it was her one day off from the diner and although she was late enough to miss homeroom and half of her Spanish class, she did arrive in time for her biology exam. Of course the day could not keep on that route as lunchtime rolled around and she discovered that she had barely two dollars to her name, having forgotten the rest of her money at home. This caused a sigh to roll across her lips as she made her way toward the vending machines that lined one wall of the cafeteria and proceeded to get a bag of doritos and a can of Coke. In her mind, Claire could not imagine the day getting any worse, but as it seemed, it wasn't over yet.
The rest of the school day went on a bit like the start, with the teen forgetting that an outline for her final paper was due in English and having to throughly beg the teacher to let her hand it in a bit late for a ten percent reduction on her grade. To top it all off, once the final bell rang, it was accompanied by a loud clap of thunder; after throughly rummaging through her backpack it was clear that she hadn't thought to snag an umbrella before leaving the house. This realization caused her to turn ocean colored eyes up toward the heavens "Really? I can't get a break?" she called up toward the ceiling of the school's main hallway, not caring about the strange looks her fellow classmates were giving her.
After zipping up her hoodie and making sure her hat was securely upon her head, the teenager made her way outside. The deluge of rain, instantly soaking the edges of her hair and shoulders as she wrapped her hands around her backpack straps, silently walking down the street toward her bus stop. Luckily for her, the rain didn't last long and soon the sun peeked out from behind the clouds. And the youth prayed that it would last at least until she got to the bus stop and had a bit of cover from it.
Her footsteps were slow, fingers curling around the straps of her backpack as the teen kept her eyes to the ground while she walked. If the youth had been paying more attention she would have noticed the footsteps that seemed to fall into the same rhythm as her own. Had she been paying more attention the teen would have noticed that the footsteps had appeared out of nowhere. Claire took no notice of these as she turned and started to take her usual short cut through a park. Droplets of lingering rain splashed upon her shoes from the grass as the youth walked. It wasn't' until a pair of perfectly polished shoes appeared that she stopped and looked up, a surprised expression upon her face.
"Claire Novak"
The blonde blinked staring at the figure before her, "Uh...yeah..." The youth responded even though the words were not spoken in the form of a question. "Do I...know you?" Claire questioned with a slight arch of her eyebrow, the figure simply responded with a shake of his head and advanced toward the teen, a silver blade appearing within his hand, one that she had never seen before and the sight of which caused her to gasp and take a step back. The fear was clear within her gaze as she quickly turned on her heel and ran off only to be greeted with the same figure just a few feet ahead of her. The sight of him caused her to let loose with a loud and frighten scream as she fell backwards onto the damp ground.
"Where is Castiel?"
The question caused the teen to blink in slight confusion as she stared at the male before her. "Wh-what? I-I don't know! I don't know I swear!" With that said the youth tried to scramble to her feet, a frighten whimper leaving her lips as the rogue angel advanced toward her. The only thing Claire could possible regret is the fact that they weren't in a more populated section of the park as the youth tried to get away.
"You will have to do then" The words were mysterious and caused Claire to look over her shoulder at him as she finally managed to get to her feet. Her frighten expression still present as she walked backwards from him, shaking her head a little. "D-do for what?" The words tumbled from her mouth as the teen looked around for some form of help.
"Bait"

Sam had been in town for two days on the biggest hunt he'd tackled since the Trials. He'd left the bunker with no intentions to return anytime soon, but with no plans of where to go. Crashing for the night at a motel, it had come together. He needed to track down a certain white-eyed demon, and he had just the right amount of determination (and the right lack of self-preservation as a result of his falling out with Dean) to do it. So he'd come to Chicago in search of Belial, Dean's demon friend. They needed to have a chat. And if Belial wanted to have a word, then Sam would get information. And if he didn't, if it came to blows, then at least Dean's dangerous perception of the white-eyed demon would be shattered. It seemed to take something of an earth-shattering size to make Dean see sense. For always getting on Sam's case about being emotional, Dean let emotion cloud his judgement on a regular basis.
But while in Chicago, Sam had heard unsettling news from an old hunting acquaintance: there had been an unusually high level of angel activity in the area. Circling a certain neighborhood, in fact. As soon as Sam had checked local maps, he knew what was going on, and he'd left the motel immediately for her. The angels were watching her, and her mother. Because of Castiel. Sam was just glad he was in the area. He should have thought to check on them, but he hadn't thought that the angels would go after them. Castiel hadn't had contact with them since possessing Claire years ago. But the angels hounding the Novak family now must be desperate.
He made it to the house and parked in the driveway, hurrying up the walk and taking the porch steps three at a time with his long legs. After knocking to no avail, he checked every window. Nothing. She wasn't there. Getting back in his car, he took the route to the nearest school, hoping it was hers. A group of kids stared at him with trepidation when he slowed to ask them if they knew Claire Novak. One boy did, and Sam asked if she went to the school ahead. She did. Sam continued on, watching both sides of the street as he drove. When he saw movement ahead on the sidewalk, he tuned in to it immediately. Three adults in dark suits and -- there it was -- a flash of blonde hair. It was her.
For a moment, Sam found himself at a crossroads. He reached over to clutch the angel blade on the seat beside him, but there was a better weapon if he could utilize it: surprise. Two of the angels were too close to Claire, but one was far enough back... Eyes narrowing, Sam gripped the wheel and gunned it straight for the sidewalk. The broad-shouldered angel was struck from the back hard enough to send him fifteen feet, and Sam wasted no time in leaping out of the car. "Oh my God, I'm so sorry," he stammered as he rounded the hood, heading for the second angel. He knew he'd only have a few moments before they recognized him. His face was, unfortunately, all too familiar to the hosts of Heaven. So Sam moved swiftly in on the female angel, grabbing her arm and thrusting the angel blade through her ribs. As blinding light flashed from her eyes and mouth, Sam looked through it to Claire. "Claire, run!"
Pulling the blade from the woman, he turned on the third angel. This one wouldn't be so easy, but he could hold him off long enough for Claire to get away. "She doesn't know where he is. Leave her alone."

Hear me, I'm crying out The fear was evident within both her expression and her voice as the teen continued to put some distance between herself and the celestial beings that seemed to appear from thin air. The last time the youth had met with a host of heaven, she had become a vessel, that was not an experience that she remembered very clearly. But, she remembered the seemingly determined spirit that the seraph known as Castiel possessed. It was the one thing that the youth had retained within her memories, and it seemed that these angels had that same determination, but for another purpose.
Claire watched them with wide eyes, a step back being taken as the youth tried to figure out a way out of this. The school wasn't that far away, she could hurry back there. She knew the building backwards and forwards, it would be easy to loose herself within the long corridors and many classrooms. As her mind worked over this plan, the youth failed to notice the approaching car, a care that was unrecognizable to her. The angel furthest away was suddenly sent into the air by the impact of the car, a sight that caused a slight scream to pull from Claire's lips as she stumbled backwards.
The diver side door opened, a male emerging from inside; Claire continued to stare, the shaggy hair, tall figure, it was all so familiar. Soon memories flashed within her mind and her lips parted in shock as she stared at the younger Winchester, the urge to call to him was strong, but unneeded. The scene that followed was one that completely shocked the youth, a blade was brought forward and plunged into the female angel. Claire stared, her eyes fixed upon the bright light that burst forward, signaling the death of the celestial being.
The youth fixed her gaze upon the tall Winchester, his words needed have been told twice as Claire quickly turned and broke out into a run, heading to her original idea and making for the school.
The angel was clearly angered by the appearance of the hunter as his hard stare was anything to say about it. "Doesn't matter. She still has a connection with him, Castiel must pay for what he's done and that child is the fastest way to find him"
Claire turned to look over her shoulder, staring at the two men as they seemingly spoke, the youth slowed, watching with a confused expression and not taking into account that the angels probably hadn't come alone. Claire slowly turned, staring at the distant building of the school, before turning back to watch the scene before her, expecting to see the hunter and angel, but coming only face to face with another angel. A shocked scream pulled from her lips as the angel before her reached out, easily grabbing onto the teen's backpack strap as she struggled. "Sam!!"

While Claire ran, Sam was locked in combat with the last remaining (or so he thought) angel. Grappling with an angel was a dangerous thing; it was why the element of surprise was so vital. Once you were face to face with them, you lost the upper hand. Sam had the angel blade but this angel had ten fingers, each of which was equally as deadly. As soon as the angel was close enough, it was reaching for Sam's forehead with two of those fingers, and Sam had to grab his arm to keep from making contact. Soon they were at stalemate, with Sam's blade-holding hand in an iron grip by the angel as well.
"If you want Castiel, wouldn't you have a better shot with me than with a clueless teenager?" He could see the idea register within the angel, who obviously wasn't the sharpest of the heavenly host. The distraction was all he needed to shove the angel off of him and ram the blade into his chest. He flashed out and Sam let him drop, looking in the direction Claire had run, hoping to see her disappearing safely into the school.
Instead, she was in the grip of another angel. Sam's heart skipped a beat. At that distance, the angel could zap Claire off the street to who-knows-where before Sam could get halfway to him. He was half a block down, watching Sam with a smug smile. He couldn't be sure a toss of the angel blade would hit him; Sam was a decent thrower but not THAT good. So there was only one option. Sam switched the angel blade to his other hand, wincing at the movement because hidden by the blade was a gash in his palm. Eyes locked onto the final angel, Sam unzipped his jacket in one fluid motion, revealing a thin t-shirt stained in wet blood. A banishing sigil. It was satisfying to see the angel flail for a bit of Claire's skin, to zap her away, but Sam was quicker. He slammed his bloody palm onto his chest and closed his eyes to shield from the light that shot from the sigil.
He expected the light; he didn't expect the burn. But it did, and Sam gritted his teeth through it. It better work. When the light faded, Sam opened his eyes, hoping to see only Claire there. He was greeted with the desired sight, and the hair on his forehead flopped as he heaved a relieved sigh. Slipping the blade into his jeans, Sam set off at a jog toward Claire. "Come on," he called, reaching out for her as he drew near. "We need to get out of here." People at the school had gathered at the edge of the property to stare, and he was sure a similar group of angels would soon be gathering as well. Putting a hand on her back and pulling her protectively to his side, Sam turned back to the haphazardly parked Impala and led her in that direction.

Hear me, I'm crying out The struggle between a human teenaged girl and a million year old angel wasn't at all fair, it was obvious as Claire tried to pull away from the celestial being's iron grasp that she was fighting a loosing battle. Her blue hues widen in shock and fear as she tried with no avail to loosen his hold upon her. A slight whimper managed it's way from her lips as the teen suddenly thought of an idea and started to slip from her backpack. The action caused the angel to gasp onto her shirt, managing only to slip his fingers around the collar of it as a sudden bright light erupted from him.
Claire let out a scream of shock, turning her head away to shield her eyes from the light. The sound of fabric ripping came across her senses as the angel let out a frustrated cry. All to soon the moment was over and the teen found herself stumbling back and falling upon the ground as the grip upon her shirt had suddenly vanished. The youth gave a gasp, her backpack resting just beside her as she looked around with wide eyes, trying to locate just what happened to the celestial being that had once been before her.
The sound of Sam's voice caused the blonde to snap back to reality, as it was becoming fairly obvious that the strange episode was starting to draw the attention of some of the students around the school. Claire quickly scrambled to her feet, blonde lochs falling about her shoulders in a messy fashion as she tried to regain her breath before sending herself into an asthma attack. The feel of the hunter's hand upon her back caused a slight jump from her as her nerves had yet to come down from their shock as she stumbled along at his side.
The trademark black impala came into view and without waiting for an invitation, the youth quickly scrambled inside, closing the door behind her as her breathes continued to come in quick gasps. Her fingers fumbled around with her backpack as it sat between her knees, grasping onto the zipper and quickly pulling on it to open up the pack. Once that was accomplished her hand dived inside, searching through the contents as her quick gasps turned into the sound of labored whizzing. Her inhaler was quickly drawn from within the pack's depths and places between her lips as the medicine was distributed through her lungs. After a small cough Claire slouched back against the seat as she looked at the hunter beside her. "Wha-what was that?! What's going on??"

Taking a moment to ensure that Claire was safely in the car before rushing around to jump in himself, Sam's eyes were never still. He looked up and down the street, where cars had stopped upon witnessing the bloodshed on the street. A glance at the school left him hoping that he was far enough from it that his face would be unclear in security cameras. He didn't exactly want to have his face plastered all over the news again, particularly when the public considered him and his brother to be dead. But there was hardly time to worry about it now. If they got him, they got him. He had to Claire to safety.
What was that? "Angels. They're after you, but you're safe. I'm getting you out of here."
Throwing the car into gear, Sam pealed around on the street and shot off away from the school. His heart was pounding; even after all the encounters he'd had in his life, with monsters, demons, and angels like the ones he'd laid out on the sidewalk, it still made his adrenaline pound. He hit the automatic lock button out of habit; as if it would do anything to keep the hosts of Heaven out. His mind shot ahead, planning the run from the law and from the angels as naturally as if he were planning what to have for dinner. They'd have to ditch the car before leaving town. Steal something nondescript, remove the plates, and get the hell out of dodge.
It took him several minutes to relax enough to realize that Claire was beside him, probably terrified. It tug a little on his heartstrings; she was a kid, she shouldn't have to deal with any of this. But then, some kids were born into the wrong family, born to people to put them in the path of this kind of danger, whether they meant to or not. Jimmy Novak had agreed to host Castiel for the rest of his life. It had already affected Claire once, and it seemed that Heaven's rejects weren't done with her yet. "Do you remember the freak comet shower," he began, wondering how to explain it to her. "That was on the news a few months back? Those weren't comets. They were angels."
Taking a deep breath, he launched into a truncated version of the long and involved tale. "Someone shut Heaven. All the angels fell to Earth--literally--and obviously, they aren't interested in sharing the space." Sam shot another look across the car to see how Claire was handling the news. "They aren't happy with Castiel, the angel who..." He trailed off. The angel who what? Possessed her Dad and took him away forever? Sam wasn't sure how a man could do that. But he guessed, if any angel was worth that kind of sacrifice, it was Castiel.
Well, it was Castiel on a good day.
"It looks like a few of them thought that they could get to him through you."

Hear me, I'm crying out "After me?!" Claire questioned as she fumbled for the seatbelt, just managing to snap it into place before the car pealed off down the street. Her voice squeaking as her shock wrapped around the two simple words as she struggled to have her mind do the same. Her fingers wrapped tightly around her inhaler as blue irises flicked around her, first outside the window, turning in her seat to gaze out of the back windshield before placing her gaze upon the youngest Winchester once again. Even after all of that, her mind still found trouble full comprehending his words, it was simply impossible to her. That heavenly beings would be after her, as far as she knew she had done nothing wrong.
It was when Sam's continued explanation pulled her attention toward him once more that she was slowly able to put the pieces together. Of course the angel did ask about Castiel's whereabouts, it only made sense that she would be a target for them seeing as her father was his vessel. A frown pulled across the youth's features as she sat in silence, slowly allowing herself to absorb all of this information as the street signs and lights flashed by the window, a signal to how fast they were going. But the speed was lost upon the teen as she allowed -or tried to- allow her body to calm down while the frown remained in place.
"Wait, what??" Claire questioned as she shook her head a little bit, more in shock then anything else. "Angels fell? that's not...how is that possible? So they're on earth? All of the angels, like every single one?" It was obvious by the tone of her voice that disbelief reigned supreme for the moment.
It was Sam's cut off sentence that caught her attention more then anything as the blonde glanced toward the hunter once more, her eyes questioning as she looked at him. "Why aren't they happy with Castiel?" Her frown returned, mind shifting through the bits of information as she tried to put together a picture of what could have happened within the heavenly realm that would cause the angels to dislike one of their own.
As they drove a sudden thought seemed to strike her as a slight gasp pulled from her lips and the youth looked around. "Wait! what about my mom? what's going to happen to her? Will she be ok? I can't just leave her" Blue hues turned toward Sam, clearly frighten for the safety of her mother.

Sam listened to Claire's shocked concern as he put her neighborhood in his rearview and got out of there as fast as he could. It was a lot to lay on a teenager, too much, and Sam regretted having to tell her any more. He regretted that she'd been pulled into it all in the first place. Cas couldn't have picked a guy without kids? A small part of Sam knew that wasn't a concern for Cas, wasn't even on his radar. But Sam knew what it was like to be a kid in over your head in a world of monsters. And he'd been raised in it. Claire had been thrust into it. He felt bad for her. And in some ways, he felt like she was his responsibility.
She wasn't of, course. If she were anyone's responsibility, it was Castiel's. But for how far he'd come, helping a kid probably didn't register on his list of priorities. And Dean couldn't be trusted not to not-let Satan into his own kid brother, so he probably shouldn't be allowed near someone else's kid. Sam knew the responsibility fell to him, and it was one he would undertake.
"Angels fell? that's not...how is that possible? So they're on earth? All of the angels, like every single one?"
"Almost every one," he confirmed as he found the highway on-ramp. He wouldn't tell her any more than she asked; if the angels should ever get to her, he wanted her to have as little to be tortured for as possible. But he was determined that wouldn't happen. There was only one choice, really. Claire would have to move into the bunker. Dean was going to love that.
"Wait! what about my mom? what's going to happen to her? Will she be ok? I can't just leave her"
"Of course not," Sam said as soothingly as he could muster while watching for a tail in his rearview mirror. "I've got a local friend watching your house, and as soon as she gets home, he'll get her to safety. Don't worry. We're going to make sure you, and your Mom, are safe." He paused and glanced over at her as he joined the flow of interstate traffic. "But it means you can't stay here. You can come and stay with me. It's safe there. You'd have your own room..." Sam cast his mind around to remember what might make a place appealing to a kid. When Sam had been young, a motel with a TV was sufficient to occupy Dean. No TV at the bunker. But Sam had spent most of his down time reading. "There's a huge library with books on everything." Everything dark and serious. But maybe she liked history? "It's not fancy, but it's probably the safest place in the country. It's the safest place for you right now."
